Hi, I'm Dee! I’m originally from Connecticut, and retired to Maui in 2001. We got tired of shoveling snow, and couldn’t think of a better snow-free zone to live in! I am happily retired from nearly 30 years as a computer consultant, working side-by-side with my husband in our own business.
I started quilting in 1978 - my first quilt was a kit called Rolling Star - all hand pieced and hand quilted. For you old timers like me, do you remember how heavy Fairfield High Loft Poly Batt was? That's what I hand quilted two queen-sized quilts on before I gave up the needle for a sewing machine. Our full time computer business kept me away from all that handwork. With my busy schedule, I was always looking for time saving ideas, like strip piecing. The invention of the rotary cutter revolutionized the process for me. No more inaccurate templates! I loved to piece tops, but rarely had the time to quilt a top. There was no such thing as a friendly local long arm quilter to finish my tops, and I certainly didn't have the time with my work and four kids to hand quilt my quilts, so I ended up tying them.
A few years ago, my wonderful husband gave me a Bernina Aurora 440 for Christmas. The advent of the Bernina Stitch Regulator has once again revolutionized quilting for me. In addition to quilting for my family, I now travel to speak about quilting and to teach hand dyeing, Hawaiian hand appliqué, and my own quilt designs. Both my 2008 & 2009 entries for the Hoffman Challenge were accepted for the traveling Trunk Show.
I live about a quarter mile from the most beautiful beach on Maui. While I quilt, my husband sails, swims, kayaks, fishes, snorkels, and just about anything else he can dream up to be on the water. He even manages to drag me away from my sewing machine once in a while to soak in our warm blue waters. As sailing in his Hobie Adventure Island kayaks has become almost a way of life for Bob, he too has a website. If you need to see some beautiful blue ocean, sailing videos or pictures of whales as they winter in Maui's waters, click here to see Kayaking Bob's website.
If you plan a trip to Maui, drop me a note at the website - I'd love to see you!
